It’s simple and takes only a few steps:
- Take an organic lemon
- Wash it
- Place it in the freezer (and wait…)
- Take your frozen lemon and grate the entire lemon, peel and all.
Then, add it to whatever you’d like! Salads, ice cream, soups, cereals, noodles, spaghetti sauce – it’s up to you! What your grated lemon will do is add a unique zest that elevates and brightens your food or drink’s flavor profile.
You can also make lemon ice cubes just like in the picture! To do this, simply blend the lemon peel, put some in each of the tray openings, top it off with water, and wait ‘til their frozen!
Why You Should Start Doing This
We’ll get to the definitive benefits below. But first, we need to clarify some claims about lemons that may not be entirely true (as amazing as the fruit is).
Lemons can contribute to our overall health which may, in turn, help prevent future diseases such as cancer. But you likely won’t achieve those anti-cancer effects simply by eating or drinking whole lemons. News of lemons being effective in preventing and killing cancer cells has been circulating for a while. Though we aren’t ruling this possibility out, reseach isn’t entirely there yet.
A few, relatively new studies have (and continue to) explore lemons as a potential cancer cell inhibitor using extracts from the citrus fruit. In the journal of Oncotarget, for example, researchers conducted both non-human and human studies on the effects of citrus limon-derived nanovesicles on cancer cell growth in various tumor cells lines. They found that, in some cases, the citrus limon-derived nanovesicles effectively tageted and suppressed tumor cell growth. Ideally, this suggests that the use of plant-derived nanovesicles may one day become a viable, non-aggressive approach to cancer treatment. However, researchers definitely need to conduct further studies and this is why simply eating lemons daily can’t offer similar results.
As you can see, an interesting aspect of lemons is their remarkable effect on cysts and tumors. One study showed how the essential oil of lemon balm, which shares the citronella component with lemons, exhibited antioxidant activity. While this activity didn’t eradicate several types of cancer cells, lemon balm oil did help reduce tumors in both human and mouse cancer cells lines. Again, researchers conduct these studies in extremely controlled and safe environments. So, we don’t advice that you start ingesting essential oil of lemon balm – at least until further human trials occur.
Another study suggests that limonoids – these are natural compounds found in lemons and other citrus fruits – impede the growth of ER+ and ER- breast cancer cells. But again, this was a lab study and further emphasizes the importance of at least considering the positive impact citrus fruits can have when it comes to breast cancer prevention.
Some go so far as to say the lemon is a proven remedy against all types of cancer – and this is a great hope to have. However, we unfortunately have to practice great patience and hope that researchers find the best natural cancer treatments as possible.
An unlikely source – one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world – claimed that after more than twenty laboratory tests since 1970, lemon citrus extracts apparently destroyed malignant cells in a dozen cancers, all while leaving healthy cells alone.
It is true that lemons seem to have anti-cancer properties. However, definitive research has not surfaced proving the supposed claims of the large, unnamed drug manufacturer. But this does not mean we should write lemons off and call it a day!
