What Happened To Bella Edwards?
On Monday, Bella Edwards was left in the care of her stepfather, Mark Jenkins. Bella’s mother, Shamika Gonzalez, left Bella, along with her 3 month-old son, Logan, with her husband around 9:00 a.m. She didn’t return home until 5:00 p.m. According to NY Daily News, Gonzalez discovered her daughter Bella in her bed around 5:30. Bella was unresponsive and her stepfather reportedly called 911 around 6:00 p.m. Before the paramedics arrived, Jenkins tried to revive Bella by administering cpr. Paramedics quickly arrived to Bella’s home as they tried to revive her. Bella was rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital where she died.
Bella’s cause of death has not been revealed. However, the NY Daily News reports that Bella showed signs of trauma consistent with abuse. Gonzalez took to social media to share that Bella’s death feels like a horrible nightmare. On Facebook, Gonzalez wrote the following:
Bella i’m so sorry I wasn’t their to protect you. This feels like a bad dream I cant wake up from. You was loved by everyone and shared so many Funny memories. I’m going to miss all the times you kissed and hugged me everyday and miss hearing you say Hi Loggy I’m your big sister. Please watch over me, Logan and the family. We all love you so much!
Gonzalez and Jenkins were questioned by the New York Police Department. They were both taken to the 100th Precinct for questioning, reported ABC7, but as of Tuesday morning, no charges have been filed in connection to the toddler’s death. Additionally, baby Logan was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He won’t be returned to Gonzalez until after the investigation is concluded.
As news of Bella’s death traveled, neighbors were stunned as Gonzalez and Jenkins appeared to be a loving family. No one saw any signs of abuse.
Neighbors Reveal That They Saw No Signs Of Abuse:
In tears and in disbelief, neighbor Laura Cabrera, 36, shared with NY Daily News that she always so Bella with her stepfather,Mark Jenkins. As an educator, Cabrera revealed that she often notices signs of abuse in children but she saw none with Bella. In fact, she always marveled over the beautiful family that lived next door.
He was with her, Cabrera said of Mark Jenkins. It was unremarkable. He held her hand in the elevator. Nothing to make you turn your head. They were all a stunning family.
Before Bella’s tragic death, Cabrera saw Bella with her stepfather on Easter. He reportedly held Bella’s hand and Cabrera remembered how beautiful Bella looked.
I just told (Bella) how beautiful she was, Cabrera said, crying, as she recalled the happy memory. She said ‘thank you’ in the sweetest little voice. She was such a beautiful kid. You focused on her.
Another neighbor, Michelle Mevorach, spoke with ABC 7 and mentioned how Bella was always so happy. According to Mevorach, Bella was well taken care of by her family as well.
I cant believe it, neighbor Michelle Mevorach said. I cant believe that because she, you wouldn’t be able to see that because she was so sweet. They took very good care of her. She was never in a bad mood, Bella. Always sweet, always happy.
In fact, Administration of Children’s Services never received any complaints of abuse until now. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy on Bella to determine the cause and manner of death. NYPD’s Special Victims Unit is handling the case.
